Martin Luther King Day is a US National holiday that is observed annually on the third Monday of January, with this year’s holiday falling on January 16th, 2023. This is observed in remembrance of the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a Baptist minister and prominent leader during the American civil rights movement. King is best known for his work on racial equality and helping to end racial segregation in the United States. The first nationwide observance of the holiday occurred in 1986. Today, it is the only US federal holiday designated as a national day of service which encourages all Americans to volunteer and help improve their communities.

3 Ways You Can Observe Martin Luther King Day

Educate Yourself.

Take the time to learn more about MLK, his life, work and legacy. Read his written works, and maybe even written by his family to learn about him as a man, and about the stories as he told them. You may find out something new, because history classes rarely give us the full picture.

Support Organizations that Fight for Racial Justice.

In the midst of educating yourself, don’t forget to support local organizations that make it their mission to fight against racial injustice.  You could join a protest, raise funds, and/or learn more about organizations like Black Lives Matter

Volunteer.

In keeping with its recognition as a national day of service, do some good in your community. You can simply start by searching for volunteer opportunities and finding those in-need near you. Just make sure that giving back to your community doesn’t begin and end with MLK day, let this be the start of something more
