Survey data from RAND’s American Youth Panel has revealed that the fraction of students using AI for homework rose to 62% from 48% in May and December of 2025.
More importantly, these students do not consider it cheating. Rather, they are using it for multiple purposes to improve their assignments.

Secondly, set boundaries on the purposes of using AI or monitor on your own why they are using it. Make them use the tools selectively that are actually effective but harmless.

Setting privacy rules is a crucial thing when it comes to students using AI. Children are likely to become vulnerable to AI and eventually get emotionally attached to AI while using it.
This kind of personal attachment might have serious consequences regarding their security and privacy. Also, there is a risk of getting exposed to inappropriate content.
Sometimes, children, even parents, also take it as fun to edit photos via AI. Just one year ago, editing pictures in Ghibli style became massively popular, where ordinary people also participated.
According to a study by Human Rights Watch, photos of Brazilian children are being used to train AI tools without their and their parents’ permission. This is chilling because it puts children’s security at risk.
To prevent that, strictly ensure they do not share personal information and identifiers with AI, like full birth name, personal photos, locations and addresses you go to, contact numbers and emails, school name, and timetables of what they do.

Duration And Schedule
Fix a timetable and duration for children to use LLMs. Especially for younger children, keep it short and brief. For a bit older ones, supervise the time duration and schedule strictly.
However, for educational purposes, you should not let them use the tools while they are not studying. If they are using it purposefully for specific research and brainstorming, it should not take a longer time duration anyway.
So, fix a time duration of one hour or less only when they are working on an assignment.
Age-appropriate Use
AI does not judge the age bracket when it responds, unless it is informed. So, the content and tools from which they are learning should be age-appropriate, which you must take care of personally.
For children at the elementary level, use AI for learning tools like flashcards, practicing language, and grammar corrections. Always make sure that they use them under your own supervision.

As we all know about AI hallucinations, you must always make your children check the data and information they get from AI. Better to make a reminder for your children to fact-check every time they are using AI in the loop.

Transperency
Maintaining transparency is a healthy practice if your children are using AI. For that, make your children take notes by themselves on why and where they are using AI.
In this way, they themselves will be aware of how much they use AI and how much they can work without it.
If they use a particular piece of information or data, then it is fine. But if they are writing a longer part of their assignments using writing tools, ask them to mark the particular section.
You can also make them a list of when and where they should mention AI-assisted parts in their assignments.
